First images of Netflix action film Interceptor released

Over the weekend Netflix hosted their online expo TUDUM, during which they unveiled new images, trailers and information about a variety of upcoming films, tv shows and documentaries. One announcement that may have snuck under the radar initially was the release of the first official images from upcoming action film Interceptor.

Interceptor, which has been filming in Australia over recent months, will star Fast and Furious actress Elsa Pataky as Captain JJ Collins. Here's the official synopsis of the film:

"When 16 nuclear missiles are launched at the US, and a violent attack simultaneously threatens her remote missile interceptor station, one Army captain must utilize her tactical training and military expertise to save humanity."

Check out Pataky in action as Captain Collins in the image below:

Luke Bracey (Point Break (2015), Hacksaw Ridge) is costarring in the film in an undisclosed role.

The film will be directed by renowned Australian author Matthew Reilly. Reilly, best known as the author of the Jack West and Scarecrow book series, will be making his directorial debut on the film. Reilly co-wrote the screenplay with Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Australia).

Reilly self-published his first novel at only 19 years old. Since then his books have sold over 7 million copies and been translated into 20 languages. In 2007 Sony Pictures was set to produce an original TV series written by Reilly, however these plans were cancelled in the aftermath of the 2007/2008 writers guild strike. While he may be less experienced in the film and television industry, viewers will be hoping that Reilly's prowess for creating incredible action sequences will translate from the page to screen.

Pataky's partner Chris Hemsworth (yes that Chris Hemsworth) will be a producer on the film. Hemsworth and Netflix have built a strong relationship over the past few years. Their 2020 film Extraction is one of the most watched Netflix original movies. A teaser trailer for that film's sequel, Extraction 2, was also released during the TUDUM expo.

Interceptor will debut on Netflix some time in 2022.
