Chris Pratt is Mario: A roundup of the internet's wildest reactions

Earlier today we brought you the new that Chris Pratt had been cast as Mario in the upcoming animated film The Super Mario Movie. In the hours that have past since the announcement was made during the Nintendo Direct online expo the internet has lost it's collective mind about the casting. Not since Ben Affleck was unveiled as Batman has a casting decision prompted so much discussion. Here we bring you a roundup of how the internet has reacted to the news.

Of course some of the initial reactions included mashups of Mario and Pratt's other movies. Many were quick to point out the relationship between Mario and Yoshi is similar to the one Pratt's character in Jurassic World had with the velociraptors.

While others decided they'd go down the thirst tweet path and imagine the Mario version of Pratt's shirtless scene in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Meanwhile ING have managed to give us an exclusive sneak peak at Pratt in the film.

But not everybody was happy about Pratt's casting as Mario.

Many were disappointed that long time Mario voice actor Charles Martinet was dropped from the role in favor of a Hollywood star.

Others seemed to think an Italian actor should've been chosen for the role of the iconic plumber.

And some even suggested that Pratt be replaced in the movie via a public campaign similar to the one that successfully got Sonic the Hedgehog redesigned in his 2020 movie.

And it was fairly clear who the internet thought should actually be playing Mario.

For his part Pratt seems to be taking any criticism in his stride. A few hours after the announcement was made Pratt released a short video on his Instagram where talked about playing Mario arcade games as a kid. He ends by joking about not quite having the voice right yet, possibly indicating his awareness towards the initial mixed reactions. Fair play to Pratt for not letting the haters get him down!

But not every casting decision has been met with controversy. The internet is collectively in love with the idea of Jack Black as the villainous Bowser.

Charlie Day's casting as Mario's brother Luigi has also been generally praised, with many fans hoping he'll bring the same energy as to the role as he does on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

It's also worth pointing out that there's far worse casting decisions the filmmakers could have made.

Yes that really is the world's second richest man Elon Musk in a Wario costume.

Some people also seemed worried that this new film may actually be WORSE than the critically panned 1993 live action Super Mario Bros.

But let's be honest here, nothing will ever be as bad as that movie!

Meme makers were quick to turn the Nintendo Direct casting announcement headshots into a template for suggesting their own castings.

Let's just hope we don't end up with any promotional photos as cursed as this one of Benedict Cumberbatch promoting Penguins of Madagascar.

People are also speculating about which video game could be the next to get the big screen treatment.

For the record we'd definitely watch a Crash Bandicoot movie starring Paul Rudd.

By far the most impressive reaction to today's casting announcements actually come from over one year ago when Twitter user @general_sthe correctly predicted Pratt's casting as Mario!

An honorable mention to BossLogic who also predicted back in 2017 that Charlie Day would be in a Mario movie, albeit as the wrong brother.

The Super Mario Movie is set to release on December 21st 2022. Let us know in the comments below if today's casting announcements have made you more or less excited for the film.
