Ranking the best celebrity cameos in Free Guy

2021's feel good hit movie Free Guy has landed on Digital and DVD/Blu-Ray this week. If you're lucky enough to live in Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the UK you can also stream the film on Disney+ (sorry Americans, due to complex contract issues Free Guy will eventually stream on HBO Max in the US, but no date has been announced yet).

Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) as Guy, an NPC (non-playable character) in a Grand Theft Auto style video game. He works as a bank teller where every day is the same as the last. That is until he meets player Molotov Girl (Killing Eve's Jodie Comer) who turns his world upside down and leads to Guy gaining sentience.

One of the most entertaining elements of Free Guy are the many easter eggs and celebrity cameos throughout the film. With the movie now available on home release we've been able to take a closer look at some things we missed the first time around. Here we'll be ranking the celebrity cameos. Lets dive in!

8. Tina Fey

Comedy icon Tina Fey (30 Rock) makes a brief voice cameo as the mother of an adult gamer who still lives at home. That's her in the background. Well sort of. That actress doesn't appear to be Fey herself but she definitely dubs the characters lines. When she interrupts her son's popular live stream, she makes a joke about how having a 22 year old stay at home son means there is no god. It's a brief and easily missed cameo but that's all Fey needs to make you laugh.

7. Lara Spencer

Good Morning America host Lara Spencer appears several times throughout the film as herself, providing exposition about Blue Shirt Guy's meteoric rise to the top. It's pretty common for action films in particular to hire real news anchors for such roles and Spencer makes the most of the opportunity.

6. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Like Fey, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Jungle Cruise) provides the voice over for another character. When Guy's bank is held up for Johnson's robber, Guy confronts him and steals his sunglasses. It's not immediately obvious to viewers that it's Johnson's voice, but once you know it's him you can't unhear it. The funniest part about this cameo casting is that the player behind the game avatar is revealed to be a foul mouthed pre-teen girl.

6. Ninja, Pokimane, Lazarbeam, Jacksepticeye & DanTDM

Various famous Twitch and YouTube streamers appear throughout the film, the most famous/successful of which is Richard "Ninja" Blevins. They generally appear to provide reactions to what Guy is getting up to. Sean "Jacksepticeye" McLoughlin provides the bulk of the exposition. Some mainstream audiences might be unfamiliar with these guys but gaming fans will love their appearance.

5. Alex Trebek

Jeopardy host Alex Trebek makes a posthumous appearance in the movie that was filmed prior to his passing in 2020. The Jeopardy segment is there to highlight the pop-cultural success of Blue Shirt Guy. We're glad the filmmakers elected to keep this cameo in the film and provide a nice tribute to the game show legend.

4. Hugh Jackman

Another voice cameo is provided early in the film by Hugh Jackman. Jackman and Reynolds are the most well known celebrity frienemies since Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel. Their 'rivalry' dates back to their time together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In Free Guy, Jackman's character provides Molotov Girl with information she desperately needs, before she promptly dispatches him. While it's probably not actually Jackman under that graffiti mask (although we can't guarantee he isn't) his voice is very distinctive. We're just happy Reynolds finally convinced Jackman to do another movie with him (even if it wasn't a Deadpool one).

3. John Krasinski

Let's be honest, nobody picked up on this cameo the first time around. In fact we still somewhat doubted it when Reynolds claimed John Krasinski (The Office) had even made a cameo. But upon re-watching the movie we finally located Krasinski's cameo as "Silhouetted Gamer". Like Jackman's appearance it's probably not Krasinski in person, but the cameo lands high on our list due to the humorous line where he admits to "teabagging" NPCs "a little bit". (If you're unfamiliar with what teabagging is then we'd suggest you don't google it at work).

2. Chris Evans

Alright we're coming to the business end now! During the film's 'boss fight' against a jacked up version of himself, Blue Shirt Guy summons Captain America's iconic shield (accompanied by The Avenger's theme music) to protect himself. It then cuts to Captain America actor Chris Evans watching the live stream of the fight. "What the sh*t!" Evans exclaims. Despite this being the shortest of all the cameos it's easily the funniest due to the impeccable comedic timing. Looks like Disney's multi-billion dollar acquisition of 20th Centaury Studios continues to be a delight for movie fans!

1. Channing Tatum

One could argue that Channing Tatum's (21 Jump Street) appearance in the film is more of a proper role and not a cameo but as he remains uncredited for his work it's fair game. The film opens with Tatum's character skydiving into Free City, landing in a sport's car alongside a literal supermodel (Sport's Illustrated swimsuit model Camille Kostek) and driving around the city as he calmly dodges all manner of chaos and destruction. Tatum reappears later in the film where it's revealed he's an avatar controlled by a nerdy gamer (the son of Tina Fey's character mentioned earlier) and a huge fan of Blue Shirt Guy. Tatum even gets a chance to show off his dance moves, in a similar style to what's recently become popular in games such as Fortnite. You've got to hand it to Tatum, he fully commits to this small role and the results are hilarious.
