Emmys 2021: The Crown and Ted Lasso dominate the awards as #EmmysSoWhite trends

Host of the 2021 Emmy Awards Cedric the Entertainer

Netflix's The Crown and Apple TV's Ted Lasso have dominated the 2021 Emmy awards. Meanwhile people have been quick to point out that every major acting award tonight was won by a white actor. The ceremony was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer in front of a scaled back audience. And in case you were wondering, no, controversial nominee Emily in Paris didn't win. Nor did Don Cheadle for his three minute cameo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Let's dive in.

Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher in her Emmy winning role on The Crown

The Crown took out the award for Outstanding Drama Series and pulled off a clean sweep of the drama acting categories (Olivia Colman - Lead Actress, Josh O'Connor - Lead Actor, Gillian Anderson - Supporting Actress and Tobias Menzies - Supporting Actor). The Netflix drama also won for Outstanding Drama Writing, Directing and Guest Actress, taking it's overall Emmy total to 21.

Ted Lasso took home the Outstanding Comedy Series, while Jason Sudeikis won for Best Lead Comedy Actor. Meanwhile Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham won Best Supporting Comedy Actor and Actress respectively. This caps of a meteoric rise for Ted Lasso, from humble beginnings as a character from an advertisement for NBC Sports to a multiple Emmy award winner. The lone comedy acting award not won by Ted Lasso went to veteran performer Jean Smart for her supporting role in Hacks. Hacks also took home the Outstanding Comedy Directing and Writing awards.

The limited/anthology series acting categories were dominated by Mare of Easttown with wins for Kate Winslet, Evan Peters and Julianne Nicholson. However Mare of Easttown lost out to The Queen's Gambit which claimed Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Ewan McGregor picked up the Outstanding Lead Actor in Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his eccentric performance as the titular fashion designer in Halston.

Many Emmy viewers were quick to point out that all the winners in the acting categories were white. The hashtag #EmmysSoWhite appeared as a result of this, reminding people of the similar controversy the Academy Awards have faced in recent years. There was more love for performers of color in the previously announced Guest Actor awards, with Courtney B. Vance, Maya Rudolph and Dave Chappelle collecting trophies. Additionally, Michaela Coel, the star of I May Destroy You won Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. She is the first black women to win in this category.

Hamilton can now add an Emmy to it's long list of accolades after winning for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). Outside of Hamilton's win it wasn't a great night for Disney+, with flagship series The Mandalorian and WandaVision going home empty handed. Other notable winners include Ru Paul's Drag Race, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Saturday Night Live.

The late Michael K. Williams in his Emmy nominated role on Lovecraft Country

The In Memoriam segment paid tribute to some of TV's biggest stars who passed away this year including eight-time winner Cloris Leachman, seven-time winner Ed Asner, Arrested Development's Jessica Walter and Michael K. Williams, nominated this year for his supporting role in Lovecraft Country.
